MC33186DH1 H-Bridge Motor Driver IC – 5A Continuous Output for Throttle Control & DC Motor Actuators
The MC33186DH1 is a monolithic H-Bridge power IC designed to drive fractional horsepower DC motors and bi-directional thrust solenoids in automotive and industrial applications. This device integrates internal control logic, a charge pump, gate drive circuitry, and low RDS(ON) MOSFET outputs into a compact 20-pin HSOP package with an exposed thermal pad for efficient heat dissipation.
This driver operates over a wide supply voltage range from 5V to 28V, with overvoltage protection against transients up to 40V. It is capable of delivering a continuous DC load current of 5A (at Tc < 100°C), with each output transistor featuring a typical RDS(ON) of just 150mΩ at 25°C. Output loads can be pulse-width modulated at frequencies up to 10kHz, enabling precise speed and torque control.
The MC33186DH1 includes comprehensive protection features essential for automotive reliability. Output current limitation activates at a typical 6.5A (±20%), while short-circuit shutdown triggers for output currents exceeding 8A. Additional safeguards include overtemperature protection with hysteresis, undervoltage disable function, and overvoltage protection against transients. A diagnostic Status Flag output provides fault feedback to the system ECU.
Logic inputs are TTL/CMOS-compatible, and the device features two disable inputs for flexible control, plus a coding input for alternative functions. The IC is specified for operation from -40°C to +125°C and qualified to AEC-Q100 automotive standards. This driver is the ideal choice for electronic throttle control (ETC), exhaust gas recirculation (EGR) valves, power window lifts, sunroof mechanisms, and other safety-critical motor control applications in modern vehicles.
